RE: Cleaning, sanitizing black and grey tanks

We use "Simple Green" in the black water tank, about 1 cup plus a couple of gallons of water. It keeps the probes clean and working accurately (Walmart - automotive department)
"Otoban" is our choice for the gray tanks. About the same proportion as black tanks (1 cup plus a couple gallons of water). Then a small additional amount in each drain that did not get the dose above. (Sam's Club in gallon size, Spray bottle size at Walmart)
When you arrive at the campground, drain the tanks (black first, then gray), and you are good to go. Both cleaners are septic tank friendly so the campground will appreciate your using them.

RE: Water Cooler on the road

We bought a reverse osmosis system and installed it in the kitchen. All beverages and ice cubes are made with it and we keep a water jug in the refrigerator. It works extremely well, we always have good water.

RE: spare tire

Ours has a recessed well under the back that cranks down the tire when needed. I think it was an option when we bought the trailer. Sure is handy and it keeps the tire out of the way and protected.

RE: Camping Cost?

We use $300-350 as a guideline when looking for a site on a monthly rate. We will not camp without water, electric and sewer. Some campgrounds will include cable and free WiFi for that amount too. Others will charge monthly rates for TV and WiFi. We find that we can stay within that budget without much difficulty. We occasionally get a surprise and find a monthly rate around $200. We will go over budget if we want to be in a particular place that has higher rates. There are so many variables that this is a difficult question. Good luck! This really is the good life.

RE: Diesel Vs Gas -Ford milage- - UPDATED

We get 11 towing usually around 62 mph assuming no big head winds and not a lot of hills. With the trailer, I can get 16-17 mpg, but my wife can get 18. She has a more gentle foot than I do.

RE: Scary Experience

Pop up campers often have a latch mechanism that comes in from the back to grab the ball. If the tow vehicle is back so that the coupler does not ride over the front of the ball when it lowered, there is a liklihood that the latch is pushed up into the ball socket on top of the ball. The handle will pull down and latch and it will "look like" it is latched when in actuality it is sitting on top of the ball without any latch in place.

RE: Yuma RVer' anyone have RO Filter system

We installed an RO System in our fiver with a 1 gallon tank. The system is mounted under the kitchen sink and we dispense the water through a separate faucet. Filter replacement is usually only once a year and we have not had a problem with the rest of the trailer since it is not filtered. It is just so convenient when making coffee, filling ice cube trays, etc. when you have your own faucet. Our unit came from Lowe's. That was by choice so that we could find filters anywhere in the country.

RE: Can I deduct the interest on my taxes?

Yes, the IRS said so. It is deducted like a mortgage interest payment. Have been doing it for years and the IRS told me to do it.

RE: Gov. Telling people to get out of FEMA trailers

This is not a new issue. RV's have long had "that smell" when they came from the factory. The cure, open the windows and let them air out. We did this at the dealership where I WORKed and the problem solved itself. If the situation is excessive, fill a pie pan with Lavoris mouthwash and place it in the center of the floor and close the unit for a day or two. The smell will disappear. This is so bogus that it makes me ill to think about the amounts of money that will be spent solving a very normal problem with new RV's.

RE: What did you do w/ your stuff?

THe kids got what they wanted, friends got some more, Good Will got a whole lot of stuff, the landfill got a lot too. The stuff we could not stand to part with went into a 10x10 storage unit. Since it is not near where we winter and where we will build at some future time, we have access to it for 4 - 5 months a year.

RE: VOTING

We are members of Escapees and as such are residents of Polk County where we register all our vehicles, and are registered to vote. Because we are on the road, we vote by absentee ballot.

We use propane all the time, they were engineered to do that. The electric side is a consumer convenience and is not as effecient.

RE: Crack in fiberglass

I've not heard anyone express concern that the crack may be caused by a frame problem in the gooseneck section. Often when the fiberglas in the bedroom area is cracked, especially around a cut-out for a door or a slide, the problem is the frame flexing when it shouldn't. If the width of the crack changes as you hook up or unhook, then I would have your dealer check the frame immediately. I hope this is not your problem as the fix is extensive and costly.

RE: Solution for the permanent residence address problem?

The real thrust of the question has to do with "one address" for all things. When we contemplated this life, we attended several seminars that recommended that all things have one address to include: titles, registrations, insurance, wills, investments, voter registration, etc. At issue is how someone handles your affairs should something happen to you while on the road. The more states that are involved, the more complicated the resolution would be. Since you already are a Texas resident, Escapees would seem like a logical choice. We joined them 6 months before we hit the road and got all of our addresses changed to out mail forwarding address. It is a legitimate street address that works for everything, including voter registration. The forwarding service is reasonable in cost and comes with a lot of conveniences. We've been on the road for 4 years and have not had any difficulties with anything.

RE: Interesting Rio Grande Valley Data

That's only a little over $700 a month and we used to spend that much up north trying to stay warm, keeping the wnow removed and buying all that heavy winter clothing. The RGV is really a bargain when you examine the ways the money is spent on fun recreational activities in the warm sun.

RE: Texas Gulf Coast, and RGV, RV Parks

Alamo Rec Veh in Alamo, just east of McAllen is our favorite. It is a mid-priced with lots of amenities park and being in the mid-valley area, it is easy to get anywhere in short order.
